Why Can’t I Turn My Head Away?
The Power of Cinemagraphs
Cinemagraph is a can’t stop looking at magical hybrid of photography and video mixed together. It includes motion that plays in a small area, in a never-ending loop, while the rest of the image remains still. Since it’s ultimately a photo in disguise it has become a perfect medium to use in Facebook, Twitter and Instagram advertisements to promote brands.
A single cinemagraph loop is traditionally very short, lasting only a few seconds in length and therefore the use for cinemagraphy is a popular tool for digital marketing. Cinemagraphs can be used for:
- Digital advertisements
- Websites, landing pages, and blogs
- Social media
- Digital displays and billboards
- Long form videos
- Museum and galleries
Flixel.com state that ‘Images play an especially important role in engaging social media audiences, as people’s attention spans shorten and more companies jockey for recognition in the digital landscape.’ With social media constantly being flooded with new content we need new ways to stand out without costing an arm and leg. Flixel.com also comments that in the ‘Microsoft’s Surface Campaign‘ cost per engagement decreased by 45% when cinemagraphy were used in their social media ads because engagement was higher than those that included still photos’.
It’s exciting to see cinemagraphs being used on social media as it defines brands and engagement audiences in new and exciting ways.
